In recent years, the implementation of the carbon footprint And the Water footprint has grown by leaps and bounds, as has been well echoed from our blog in a Previous POST, making it increasingly common for companies and other agents to calculate and publish their fingerprints.

As we well know, the carbon footprint is a measure that allows us to evaluate the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by an organization, a product, an event or even an entire country. On the other hand, the water footprint is a measure of evaluating the impact of water use for a given organization, territory, product, region or country. The implementation of both represents an important step towards objectives, both national and international, in terms of decarbonization and use of water resources that directly affect such important global problems as climate change or resource scarcity.

The new Climate Change Act approved last April by the Congress of Deputies, provides for the obligation for companies to calculate and make public their carbon footprint together with the creation of plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adding, in a similar way, their extension to the calculation of the water footprint of companies. This causes a necessary movement at the regional level on the part of institutions that, in line with other measures provided at the national level, promote and apply the implementation of these tools according to the new context.

On behalf of Ideas, we will update the information to the different regulations that are established at the provincial level to inform about the changes that are sure to arise in the coming months for organizations.

In this case we are going to talk about the “Business Sustainability Check” promoted in parallel with the MITECO registration of carbon footprints. The region of Murcia has been launched to promote voluntary agreements between the private and public sectors to promote footprint calculation, not only in those companies that by law are obliged to take part in emissions trading, which mainly affects large companies and factories, but also for all those “diffuse sectors” that also cover a significant share of emissions.

This “Check” is a grant that establishes a series of grants for the calculation of both footprints according to the strategies described and which is a sample of the initiatives that are being promoted by the institutions.

The characteristics of these grants are as follows:

  1. ISE CATEGORY 2022 - 1: Organizational carbon footprint:
    1. 200 euros in the case of calculation by an accredited professional and registered with MITECO.
    2. 000 euros if the cost of the certification company in accordance with the ISO 14064 standard is combined with the above scenario.
  2. ISE CATEGORY 2022 2: Product Carbon Footprint:
    1. 000 euros in the case of calculation by an accredited professional and registered with MITECO.
    2. 000 euros if the cost of the certification company in accordance with ISO 14067 is included in the previous case.
  3. ISE 2022-3 CATEGORY: Corporate water/water footprint:
    1. 000 euros, which includes the services of an accredited professional plus the cost of the certification company in accordance with ISO 14046.

The beneficiaries of these grants are aimed at SMEs in the Region of Murcia that have not registered their carbon and/or water footprint calculations up to the time of application, and the intensity of the subsidy to be applied to eligible expenditure will be 60% plus 15% if the beneficiary's activity is framed in RIS3MUR. These grants will be given to those applicants who apply by 31/01/2023.

This represents a great opportunity for SMEs in the Murcia region to be part of the sustainable roadmap to which all participating agents are committed. This grant can be a starting point for establishing those actions that are adapted to our current context in the region.

From Environmental Ideas, backed by more than 20 years of experience as environmental consultants, we are available to inform and accompany each of the organizations interested in starting to walk on the sustainable path that is beginning to be designed.
