Organizations are increasingly integrated into society and concerned about the environment. How can they know their environmental impacts or set out to minimize them if in most cases they haven't quantified them?
The Environmental Footprint (HA) is an indicator that allows us to know what is the progress of an entity towards the circular economy. It is a model in which the entry of resources and the generation of waste associated with the development of a given activity are minimized. This concept in the European Union was born in 2013 when the methodology for calculating the environmental behavior of products and organizations was published (2013/179/EU).
A year later, the Carbon Footprint registration (Basic Concepts of the Carbon Footprint), one of the components of HA that is also based on the analysis”Cradle-to-Grave” of life cycle. As of today, there are already more than 1000 registered organizations, among which I could not miss Environmental Ideas with the obtaining of the carbon footprint calculation seal in 2014.

Also in 2014, the ISO 14.046 standard was published (see our blog post) for the calculation of another of the members of the HA, the so-called Water Footprint or Water Footprint depending on the methodology we choose. Despite not being as widespread and proven as the carbon footprint, it is crucial for all activities where this environmental vector stands out. As an example, it is worth taking a look at experiences carried out in Murcia by different public and private actors over the past few years.

Administrations are expected to be exemplary and to determine their environmental behavior. At the same time, they will incorporate the environmental footprint as an assessment criterion in purchasing and public procurement procedures. But where this indicator really makes sense is in companies, small or large, that want to position themselves in the field of sustainability.
