Restoration at the Castillo de Peñas de San Pedro

Recently, a series of works have begun, under the heading of “Restoration actions in the Castillo de Peñas de San Pedro”, which include different tasks of maintaining, cleaning and restoring different elements in the aforementioned castle located in the Albacete town of Peñas de San Pedro.
This is the first time that, after several campaigns dedicated to the replacement of the castle's perimeter wall, restoration work has been carried out under the supervision and control of personnel specialized in archeology, and this task is carried out by the archaeology department of Ideas MedioAmbiental SL.

The fortress of Peñas de San Pedro, known in Arab sources as Sant Bitar, Sant Bitru, Sanfiro or Sanfiruh, and in Christian sources as Rupe Sancti Petri or Pennas Sancti Petri (Pretel, 2005), occupies the upper part and the southwestern slope of a limestone plateau that rises above the plain, where the first elevations of the Sierra del Mundo and Segura begin to sharpen, and which delimit the Llanos de Albacete to the south, having the fortress of Chiny It squeaks like the opposite end of the control of that step.
In the 13th century it was reconquered, becoming a Christian monk of King Alfonso VIII and becoming a border with the Muslim kingdom of Murcia. Peñas de San Pedro was dependent on Alcaraz until in 1537, according to the letter of privileges of March 4, signed by Carlos I and his mother Juana, he was granted the title of Villa and the emancipation of Alcaraz. Until that date and especially during the 14th century, the town of Peñas de San Pedro was repopulated by people who came from Alcaraz.

The fortress, clearly military in nature and inhospitable because of its nature, had been abandoned as a place of residence since the beginning of the 18th century, in a process that had begun in the 15th century.
The purpose of this construction project is, first, to proceed to complete the outer perimeter enclosure of the Castle enclosure, as a priority safety measure to prevent people from falling, being able to establish tour itineraries throughout the walled enclosure; then, the restoration and replacement of various collapsed or collapsed construction elements such as the so-called San Fernando Battery and, finally, the enhancement of the Castle, to promote the influx of visitors and knowledge of the fortification and its history by them through posters and street furniture.

The location of the castle is this, and although it is under restoration, you can access the plateau where the fortress is located and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of both the Albacete plain and the first foothills of the mountains. It is also possible to take a historic walk around the slope of the castle along the recently opened path, and contemplate the walled remains.
