The Senate approved last Thursday a reduction in VAT on flowers and ornamental plants, which will go from being taxed by the general rate of 21% to a reduced rate of 10%. This is stated in an amendment included in the tax reform, which will now return to the Congress of Deputies to complete its parliamentary processing and may enter into force on January 1, 2015.
The reduction in VAT on flowers and ornamental plants was an initiative of CiU and through an amendment, negotiated with the PP and approved by all groups, to the Bill that amends the Value Added Tax Act, one of the three regulations that make up the so-called tax reform.
According to the amendment, agreed by all parliamentary groups in the Senate, “flowers, living ornamental plants, as well as seeds, bulbs, cuttings and other products of exclusively vegetable origin that can be used to obtain them” will be taxed at 10%. Before the increase in VAT approved by the Government in 2012, all these products were taxed at 8%.
