The main consequence on the environment of the current development model has been a constant and rapid one fragmentation of ecosystems, which has involved the division of continuous and extensive habitats into smaller and smaller portions that are isolated from each other due to the effect of barriers, making it difficult for species to disperse and affecting their survival rates. Among the main factors responsible for the fragmentation of the landscape, the following stand out: transport infrastructures, especially developed in richer countries where thousands of kilometers of high-capacity roads and railways have been implemented in recent decades.

Therefore, it is a priority to find models and solutions that allow the development of new transport infrastructures without increasing the fragmentation of habitats, while reducing current impacts. One of the main existing tools for providing solutions, at least partial, to this serious environmental problem are wildlife passages.
