The Government of Catalonia has approved the revision of the Special Plan for Emergencies for Forest Fires, conegut com Pla INFOCAT, with the objective of strengthening the capacity of the civil protection and emergency system to increase the risk of forest fires in the context of climate change.
Among the novelties, the new INFOCAT incorporates level 4 of the Alpha Plan, which will entail the possible prohibition of access to forest masses. Això will allow us to be more precise in delimiting the consequences of each situation.
Implementation and impact of Infocat
The revision of the Infocat seeks to face the most frequent extreme risk scenarios due to climate change, with the simultaneous occurrence of forest fires, the appearance of rapidly evolving fires and affecting large areas of territory. Under this revision, all Catalan municipalities will be obliged or recommended to have a forest fire plan, increasing the percentage of municipalities under this obligation from 72% to 80%.

Measures to protect the population
As for measures to protect the population, criteria and processes have been detailed to establish confinement and evacuation in case of forest fire, as well as the limitation of interurban mobility in situations of risk. In short, the revision of the Infocat represents a comprehensive effort to adapt to the challenges of climate change and to strengthen the capacity to respond to forest fires, ensuring better protection for the population and natural resources of Catalonia.
